This was a required text for my psychiatric nurse practitioner program, and as I was unable to locate just a single version of the book, I bought this 5 pack. I'm still scratching my head as to why this is sold as a 5-pack and why the single book isn't available at a fifth of the price. Now I'm wondering what to do with the other 4--gift them to other students? If you have to buy this book for school, you may consider teaming up with other classmates to share the cost.
I bought this book as a requirement for a class in grad school (mental health counseling degree) but I didn't find it very useful outside of that class. I either learned the majority of the information in this book in various grad school classes, at my internship site, or the information was readily available in the DSM IV. I imagine some students may appreciate this book when they are just starting to learn how to diagnose; but this is not a book that I chose to hold onto for the long run. As a mental health counseling student, I felt that the information was already provided in other courses, the DSM IV, and in my internship experience but the book may be helpful to social workers or other professionals who are new to diagnosing.
I am a 2nd year psychiatry resident, and in that developmental period when differential diagnosis starts to become a real tool in your armamentarium. The book is informative and concise. The introductions to, and discussions of the various psychiatric symptoms are very informative and helpful. They are like having an experienced psychiatrist as your personal tutor. It leaves you wishing the discussions were much longer. The first chapter, which discusses the six diagnostic areas that should not be missed in a psychiatric workup, is a MUST READ for every psychiatry resident, and quite frankly, every resident/medical student regardless of the specialty. It is spot-on and uncanny in its accuracy, and will help make almost immediate sense of nearly ANY psychiatric patient. My diagnostic abilities increased dramatically after reading that chapter. Well worth the money, I highly recommend this book.
I like the new SCID as it is very useful and necessary part of diagnostic process. This version is easy to use and has separate modules that can be used separately.
ALLOT OF NEW AND UPDATED INFORMATION That is Critical for being able to treat patients. I am very pleased to have the new DAM. GREAT work.
I use this book for work and it is as expected. It arrived very soon after it was ordered, if I have any concern it is the book was supposed to be new but the cover of the book had some minor damage.
