A lot of people use the term “gifted writer” to describe their favorite book or author, but few specifically identify this “gift,” which weakens their compliment. Diana Butler Bass is indeed a gifted writer in every sense of the word. Her prose has a rhythm that beats with the heart of the topics she chooses; she’s homespun but authoritative; but her real gift is a unique ability to make deeply complex spiritual matters easy to understand. This is exactly what she’s done with her new book Grounded.Grounded teaches a vital truth that needs teaching, and it’s done with breathtaking simplicity through wonderful anecdotes from the author’s life. There are no complex parables or confusing academic language, just pure storytelling that grips the reader from start to finish. I give it my highest recommendation. The premise of Grounded is simple: God is everywhere: in the earth and all creation but also in that which connects us to the earth, our roots, our sense of home, our neighborhoods, and even in the commons where we gather. Therefore, being grounded is a vital step in the process of discovering God as He is within us and us within God. This is not to be confused with the “personal relationship” used by evangelical groups that preach what Ms. Butler Bass calls “the vertical God,” the one “up there” in “Heaven.” Many Christians consider spirituality and mysticism to be “new age” and dangerous to the saving of one’s soul, but Ms. Butler Bass makes the most powerful opposing arguments that I’ve ever read. Anyone on a spiritual journey that includes the deconstruction and reconstruction of their own faith needs to read this book. It’ll help you better understand the tugging your own soul, the one that says, “There has to be more.”

If we could step down and away from the culture wars and attend to the elemental properties of our creation and sustenance, we might be able to find a way forward out of the echo chambers of our ideologies. This book is an elegant reflection on a contemporary lens all of us--religious, spiritual, both or neither--can employ to once again be grounded as human and spiritual beings. God is waiting for us--at eye level.

Dear Ms. Bass; If your book had ceased with your Introduction I would have awarded you with a full five stars. You have accurately described the fear, angst and aloneness that one experiences when a pilgrim breaks away from a long standing religious philosophy. Yes, a person does have both the mixed emotions of utter excitement and complete dread as one embarks on this new-found spiritual journey. But, as stated previously, you should have stopped after the intro. but, alas, you did not. The reasoning for your transposition is explained in grave detail in the following chapters. Two of your major failures is that you both have a scant understanding of science leading you to make incomplete and/or inaccurate statements about you interpersonal interactions, and secondly you fail to question whether the Bible texts that you quote so freely in this tome are accurate and, more importantly, if the characters who are quoted as saying them existed at all. With this latter concern I realize that you come from a highly contained and close-minded academic background but, that being said, is this not the same background that you have championed yourself as being a person who has rejected your previous religious and spiritual state?Let me close with a word of caution for other readers of this and other spiritual auto-biographies. When we, as a people, come to realize that our religious affiliations have hampered, instead of encouraged, our spiritual growth and break away from it we rapidly come in contact with facts and events that we have been denied previous entree into. From this explosion of thoughts we have a strong tendency that because we took the ‘brave step’ and rejected past teachings we must now be experiencing what we have been blinded to see previously; THE TRUTH. While I can certainly understand the feeling and the freedom that accompanies it, please do not delude yourself or others to your newly found stance of being the trail blazer that all others should follow. For an example, let us say that we have a neighbour friend whose name is Bill. In addition to your friendship he is also friends with ten other people in the neighbourhood and each one of these are treasured by him but, more importantly, each one of these relationships is different and unique from all the others. Does this mean that Bill is a different person when he encounters another person? Of course not! Bill is simply Bill and always will be. In my mind this is identical to our relationship with God. Each person’s relationship is both different and unique as it is with Bill and his friends. When a person breaks away from a ‘group think’ set of beliefs, as the church presents, the new relationship you experience with God is also different and unique from everyone else’s. So please do not write books, as this one is, about how you have found the ‘truth’ and attempt to convince others to take the same path, form the same thoughts, or experience eternity the same way as you have for all of us are individuals and, being as such, are not meant to have the same experiences that you have had. Each one of us is to experience God in the manner that are abilities lead us. None of us need to create a list of tenets and encourage others to follow. None of us should recreate another set of rules, regulations and belief systems, for this is the binding factors that we escaped our original church to begin with...............

Lovely, clear, accessible, makes Spirituality vital.she understands Christianity, the Bible. I'm planning on suggesting my Women's Spirituality Group read it.

Diana Bass has hit it out of the ballpark yet again. If you, or someone you know, has drifted away from organized religion, this can be a wonderfully revelatory book. Bass’ well informed, well conceptualized, and well articulated argument explores a vibrant spirituality among those who choose other paths. It is a spirituality that is in one sense new yet in another sense a return to the concrete this-worldness of most of the Hebrew scriptures and the incarnational theology of much of the Greek Christian scriptures.

Rare is the writing that is at once poetic and profoundly accessible. Even more rare is the writing that is at once relevant and engaging and about religion/spirituality/God. This book is the rarest of gems: It is all of that and more. For those who have made the journey away from the ancient religious traditions into a more fulfilling spiritual communion, "Grounded" is an echo of what was heard and a map of the frontier explored. For those beginning the journey, or yearning to find what's missing, "Grounded" is a gentle guide. Whether you're yearning, starting, or well traveled, you will be enlightened and moved by this book. Te reading will be slow, but only because of the many times you will stop to let the writing soak in, the many times you will stop to contemplate, and the many times will stop to reach for a tissue to wipe your eyes. Something new is emerging in our spiritual lives, and "Grounded" gives us insight into what that something is. Genuinely, it is a thing of beauty.

Ignosticism: A Philosophical Justification for AtheismBy Tristan Vick

An AMAZON.COM best seller! What if the question "Does God exist?" proved to be meaningless? What if the very definition of "God" was incoherent? Could you still, in good conscience, believe in something if it was incoherent and meaningless? Would it even be possible to talk about an incoherent and meaningless thing meaningfully? If not, then what consequences would follow from this realization? These are the questions which the branch of philosophy known as ignosticism concerns itself with. Ignosticism: A Philosophical Justification for Atheism examines these questions and delves into the idea that "God" is a type of language-game. Taking a Wittgensteinian view of language, Tristan Vick takes us on a journey from learning theory to semantics to psychology in this philosophical exploration of whether or not the idea of God holds any relevant meaning. Perhaps more controversial still, Vick makes the case that ignosticism, properly understood, can be used as a positive justification for the reasonableness of atheism.

Amazon.com Review
Meet Sophie. She sees herself as the too-tall "Mount Everest of teenage girls," who, along with her friends, often suffers from "lackonookie disease." She's dating smoky, sexy Dylan, covertly chatting online with "cybersoul"-mate Chaz, and secretly nursing a crush on sweet, geeky Murphy. Her two best friends are closer to her than sisters, and she "hates hating" her soap opera-addicted mom, wishing "she would show half as much interest in my life as she does in Luke and Laura's." In other words, Sophie is a typical teenage girl. What is not so typical is how author Sonia Sones records all of Sophie's thoughts in a freewheeling verse that is such a naked outpouring of inner longing, most readers will blush in embarrassed recognition of their own remembered or current teenage desires. Sones gently leads both the reader and Sophie towards an understanding of the difference between love and lust as Sophie slowly comes to realize that Dylan's outsides are no match for Murphy's insides. Autobiographical of Sones, perhaps? The author claims it isn't so, and she's probably right. With her frank manner, lusty thoughts, and hidden insecurities, Sophie reflects many teenage girls, past and present. No woman will be able to read this heartfelt verse novel and not find a bit of herself in Sophie's secret, sexy thoughts. Sones's decadent, almost shamefully delicious collection of angst poems is a loving and amazingly accurate tribute to adolescent girlhood. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly
*Starred Review* Drawing on the recognizable cadences of teenage speech, Sones (Stop Pretending) poignantly captures the tingle and heartache of being young and boy-crazy. The author keenly portrays ninth-grader Sophie's trajectory of lusty crushes and disillusionment whether she is gazing at Dylan's "smoldery dark eyes" or dancing with a mystery man to music that "is slow/ and/ saxophony." Best friends Rachel and Grace provide anchoring friendships for Sophie as she navigates her home life as an only child with a distant father and a soap opera-devotee mother whose "shrieking whips around inside me/ like a tornado." Some images of adolescent changes carry a more contemporary cachet, "I got my period I prefer/ to think of it as/ rebooting my ovarian operating system," others are consciously clich‚d, "my molehills/ have turned into mountains/ overnight" this just makes Sophie seem that much more familiar. With its separate free verse poems woven into a fluid and coherent narrative with a satisfying ending, Sophie's honest and earthy story feels destined to captivate a young female audience, avid and reluctant readers alike. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6-8-A story written in poetry form. Sophie is happily dating Dylan, "until he's practically glued himself to my side." Then she falls for cyberboy ("if I could marry a font/I'd marry his"). Imagine her surprise when he becomes downright scary. In the satisfying ending, Sophie finds the perfect boyfriend-someone she's known all along. Sones is a bright, perceptive writer who digs deeply into her protagonist's soul. There she reveals the telltale signs of being "boy crazy"; the exciting edginess of cyber romances; the familiar, timeless struggle between teens and parents; and the anguish young people feel when their parents fight. But life goes on, and relationships subtly change. Sones's poems are glimpses through a peephole many teens may be peering through for the first time, unaware that others are seeing virtually the same new, scary, unfamiliar things (parents having nuclear meltdowns, meeting a boyfriend's parents, crying for no apparent reason). In What My Mother Doesn't Know, a lot is revealed about the teenage experience-("could I really be falling for that geek I dissed a month ago?"), clashes with close friends, and self-doubts. It could, after all, be readers' lives, their English classes, their hands in a first love's. Of course, mothers probably do know these goings-on in their daughters' lives. It's just much easier to believe they don't. Sones's book makes these often-difficult years a little more livable by making them real, normal, and OK.

Who Was Albert Einstein?

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-This biography describes Einstein's early struggle to harness and focus his extraordinary abilities; his relationships with his family and first wife; and, lending depth to the story, his most significant scientific discoveries. Brallier does an adequate job of presenting the facts and injects touches of humor into his text. He also discusses Einstein's exile from Germany in the early 1930s and his political views and activities, including the irony that the man who strove for a world without war helped to create the atomic bomb. There are several full-page sidebars, including one on "The Magnetic Earth" and another on "Hitler and the Nazis," and two time lines that contrast world events with those of the scientist's life. Black-and-white cartoon illustrations do little to enhance the text.Carol Fazioli, formerly at The Brearley School, New York City Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#2,680 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I was really excited to read this one to my two little girls due to much we have enjoyed many of the others in this series but no one enjoyed this one. It just was not written with kids in mind like the others were. It was very dry and used a lot of very abstract and obtuse quotes at the beginning of every chapter that really screamed the author did not know how to write for kids. The way sentences were written, the flow of the book, and the content was not done well to captivate the minds of young readers...or even myself for that matter and I love reading this kind of stuff.

My 1st grader needed an Einstein biography for his wax museum project and this said it was for little kids—it’s a long chapter book that was more for 4th graders. I had to read it and take notes for him. The reading wasn’t so much too hard for him, so much as the length of the book.

Ok, I'm going to start off by saying that my son absolutely HATES to read. He's always struggled with reading. This is the first book he read on his own without me pushing him to read. He's in middle school so this is a little under his grade level, but it was perfect for him. He had to read a biography for school, so I got him "Who was Frank Lloyd Wright?" ( my son loves building, and thought he might find it a little interesting) Surprisingly, he enjoyed it, and completed his book report before the deadline. So I bought him this book to read for fun because he also loves science. He had it finished in under 2 weeks! So I will definitely be buying more books (or checking them out from the library) in the near future. FINALLY! A book series my son WANTS to read!!! And they're educational too!

This is an EXCELLENT book. I shall personally try to live by my subject headline of A = X+Y+Zwhere if A = success ; X = Work, Y = Play, and Z = Keep your mouth shut !!! Only Einstein could have put this wisdom in the form of an equation.Of course, I think the book is well written and shows the reader that Einstein's life was sometimes scary for him, joyous and very often incredibly sad.Overall I enjoyed it very much as it gave me an insight into a very great man in a concise manner.Thank you Jess Brallier.

Well written and fascinating account of Albert Einstein! Should be required reading in K-8 Reading Curriculum. I continue to buy copies for both my peers and colleagues to share with them the history and life story of this "Genius!"

We love the “Who Was” series. They are fabulous at making non-fiction, biographical text accessible to younger readers. They make reading about the life of a real person interesting and informative. There are great pages infused throughout the books giving you insight into tangential topics that support the reader’s understanding of the text as a whole.Albert Einstein was another in a long line of enjoyable biographical texts!

These are the best nonfiction books for 3rd through 6th graders for AR. As a teacher and a parent, these are always my first recommendation to meet their AR goal. We require 3 nonfiction books per 9 weeks and these can be read in just a few days. They are informative and the kids overwhelmingly enjoy them.

I got this for my sis year old. I think the language is challenging enough without it being too above level. It definitely inspires questions and look ups. My son's only complaint is the illustrations. He finds the cover creepy and the inside look careless. I think photos or more thought out illustrations could have made this good book even better.

Classical Social Theory and Modern Society: Marx, Durkheim, WeberBy Edward Royce

Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber are indispensable for understanding the sociological enterprise. They are among the chief founders of the discipline and among the foremost theorists of modernity, and their work can stimulate readers to reflect on their own identities and worldviews. Classical Social Theory and Modern Society introduces students to these three thinkers and shows their continued relevance today.

The first chapter sets the stage by situating the work of Marx, Durkheim, and Weber in the context of three modernizing revolutions: the Enlightenment, the French Revolution of 1789, and the industrial revolution. Three overview chapters follow that summarize the key ideas of each thinker, focusing on their contributions to the development of sociology and their conceptions of modern society. The last portion of the book explores the thinking of Marx, Durkheim, and Weber on four themes—the pathologies of modern society, the predicament of the modern individual, the state and democracy, and socialism versus capitalism. These thematic chapters place Marx, Durkheim, and Weber in dialogue with one another, offering students the opportunity to wrestle with conflicting ideas on issues that are still significant today.

Classical sociology is essential to the teaching of sociology and also an invaluable tool in the education of citizens.
