In 1998, Tom Malloy was one of the lead actors in the film Gravesend, produced by Oliver Stone. The film became an indie-cult favorite. Fellow filmmakers, we have a lot in common and a lot of differences but the hardest thing to do and the thing most of us put off and find the most difficult is to ask for the MONEY. Tom tells you how to ask for the MONEY.Most of us read books about film-making and we learn something from all of them but you don't really know what it's all about until you actually make a movie. Tom makes movies, he doesn't have a "day job" like most of us, movie making is his life. The great thing about the way Tom writes is that you are there with him as he goes through the trials and tribulations of getting the MONEY to make his films. It is real and it is on point.Bankroll is the best book I have read on film financing and in the top 5 of the over 150 books I have read on all aspects of film-making. As you go on this journey with Tom you will learn much more then film financing.I have made a full length movie "Equal Strength" which I financed myself for under $15,000. We won 3 awards in film festivals, including the jury and audience awards for best feature film. We also made a short film that cost about the same that has won awards for best short film, best director, best actress, and best actor. Does that mean anything, not really, we know nothing, but we have been in the trenches and that is a far cry from talking about it.I just finished a full length script that has a budget of $1,400,000 and I am going to use what I learned in Bankroll to get the MONEY, thank you Tom.P.S. I don't know Tom, I call everyone by their first name, even the Presidents of the United States when I was a photojournalist, no one complained during my life, except for one person.

First off, let me say that I rarely write reviews unless I am truly blown away by a product. That is surely the case with Tom Malloy's "Bankroll".To be short, I am a filmmaker, visual effects artist, and producer who owns a production and post production house in which I am juggling 15 or more ACTIVE projects at any given time. Usually, it will take me about 2-3 weeks to find the time to read a good book from cover to cover.....I read this book in less than 36 hours!! I couldn't put it down!Tom Malloy has shared his knowledge acquired from hard work, dedication, and a ton of creativity! Tom's experience in financing independent films has given him some of the best insight to share with other aspiring filmmakers, looking to raise capital for their films. Tom doesn't hold back, as he give you all the tips and tricks needed to raise millions of dollars for your movie!Furthermore, Tom is one of the few people who write these books that actually "practices what they preach". Tom essentially started out just like the rest of us, and has since raised millions of dollars for his films using the methods laid out in this book.If you are an aspiring filmmaker, producer, etc., than this book is a MUST HAVE in your film industry reference library! Read this book, re-read it, and memorize it!! If you practice the methods in this book, there is no way you won't be able to finance your next film!

I, like so many others, live in "Indiewood". I've read a lot of books on the art of funding the project, hoping to have a lightbulb moment, and I have finally found the perfect vehicle for that, which is this book. Tom Malloy doesn't spout a lot of platitudes that other authors may feel necessary to sell books. He doesn't create a fairy tale, he doesn't sugar coat anything - and when you are done reading this book you will never have your confidence as high as to being able to make your dream a reality. It's like going into a battle fully armed. Everyone has their dreams of Academy glory (I know I do), but this book does one better - it gives you the tools you can utilize to have a much higher chance of success. Malloy even manages to write in such a way that you will come up with ideas you may not have even thought of. He doesn't hand you the keys to his rolodex, he hands you the blueprint to create your own. Give a man a fish, as they say. And the end results are far more satisfying. Because Malloy works in the trenches, his insight is invaluable. You really need to read this book!!!

This book was excellent. It gave great examples on how to go about raising funds for feature films. It's about taking the steps to actually do it vs. Just talking about it. It can be done if you are persistent. My favorite was how he stayed on top of lawyers. Learn to control your costs. And always have more than one lawyer to choose from.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s one of the few industry books written by someone who has a track record in what they’re teaching. He shares a lot of extremely valuable information and I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style.

Arthur C. Clarke is indisputably one of the great sci-fi writers of all time. Not only are his novels 2001: A Space Odyssey, Rendezvous with Rama, and The Songs of Distant Earth classics, but he had a brilliant scientific mind. Based on a paper he published in 1945, he is considered to have been the originator of the idea of using satellites in geosynchronous orbit for communications. Talk about a world-changer.Childhood's End is one of his early novels, and probably not one of his best, but it's certainly enjoyable. The set up is familiar: an race of aliens parks their massive spaceships in the air above several of the world's largest cities. They set themselves up as benevolent dictators, of a sort, sharing much of their advanced technology with humans, yet retaining a level of control. Clarke draws similarities to colonialism, like England's colonial occupation of India.There are groups who resist the aliens' influence, but for the most part mankind enters a new era of peace and prosperity. Hunger and war are eliminated, thanks to the new technology, and work is mostly voluntary. No one has to work for basic needs; they just work at what they like. Eventually we find that the aliens are in fact working for an even more advanced race which has their eyes on humanity, which is about to enter a new stage of evolution.The story itself goes downhill toward the end, in my opinion. To me, speculation about interactions with alien races, the impact of technology on daily life, and cultural and historical futures are more interesting to me than the sort of mystical, fantasy story this turns into. Despite that, Childhood's End is worth a read. And get this: the edition I read had a blurb from C.S. Lewis! Any book with an endorsement from St. Jack is OK by me!Clarke's brilliance as a writer and storyteller are indisputable. Few have been as visionary as he. Even though this is not one of his "don't miss" novels, it's still a great read.

I read quite a few reviews before deciding to purchase this book. As surprised I was about the negative reviews, I do understand where they came from. However, that didn't stop me from giving this book 5 stars. One of the biggest complaints I saw was about the lack of character development. I think because the storyline spans well over 100 years and is told through different characters, you're really not going to get a ton of character development. Just enough to keep the storyline moving along. I think that worked well for this book but, obviously, many will disagree with me. Another criticism is that it has a dark, pessimistic view of human nature. This is very much true...at least, in the first part of the book. The Overlord, Karellen, tells humans they have "a notable incapacity for dealing with the problems of its own rather small planet." I'm a pretty pessimistic person and I agreed with every word of Karellen's speech. However, much later in the book, we discover that there is a kind of hope for the human race. The last major criticism was Clarke's incorporation of paranormal activities in the plot. I thought it was very interesting that he would throw that in there as well. It's explained much later in the book...suffice to say, science has not explained all the mysteries in life and maybe never will. At least, not in my lifetime. This book isn't for everyone. Some readers will downright hate it and understandably so. However, if you can get past these three main criticisms, I think it's definitely worth the read.

Probably my favorite SF book of all time. Written in 1953, and yet, the essential question posed by the story is still the definitive question we will face if confronted with a vastly superior life form, presenting fundamental changes to our existence. It starts out as a "strait" hard science early-SF novel, but morphs into so much more. I wish I could go into more detail, but that would be a HUGE spoiler. Read it. This is one of the VERY few SF novels that I recommend to my non-SF friends - and they have all loved it.

I was going to read a couple chapters and go to bed. Next thing you know, its 9am and the book is finished. And I am now a different person. lol you know the feeling, its one of those. I would say this is his greatest book. Even better than the Space Odyssey books.CAREFUL, they just made a SyFy miniseries and even looking it up on IMDB blows major plot points from the pictures.

Do not be put off by the age of the book – this is first-rate science fiction, a timeless classic. Arthur C. Clarke (of “2001 – a Space Odyssey" fame) published “Childhood’s End” in 1953, and though a very prolific author, this is one of his best. There are a number of small points in the book that will date the writing to around 1950, but the theme, powerful ideas, and superb writing make this a worthy read in the twenty-first century for anyone who enjoys science fiction.The title, “Childhood’s End” is a metaphor for the evolution of the human race to a higher level. That evolution is shepherded by an alien species called Overlords in the book. In only 226 pages, Clarke takes us through an understanding of the Overloads and their somewhat benign relationship with man, a visit to the aliens’ home world, and the evolution of our species. His prose is tight and gorgeous; and paints marvelous pictures throughout the story. It is an easy, quick read that will stay with you long after. Why this book has not been turned into a film is beyond me, although I do think it has probably inspired many other movies.Some readers complain the book is a bit of a downer. I did not read it that way at all. I highly recommend “Childhood’s End” to any science fiction fan.

About the Author

Dr. William Prentice is Professor of Exercise and Sport Science and Coordinator of the Sports Medicine Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also serves as the Director of the NATA approved Graduate Athletic Training Education Program. He received his BS and MS from the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. in Sports Medicine and Applied Physiology from the University of Virginia. He also has a BS in Physical Therapy from the University of North Carolina. He is a Certified Member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and has received the Sayers A. "Bud" Miller Distinguished Athletic Trainer Educator Award and the Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award from the NATA. In 2004 he was inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame. Dr. Prentice served as the Athletic Trainer for the Women's Soccer Program, which has won eighteen NCAA National Championships. He teaches graduate courses in sports medicine and athletic training. Dr. Prentice is the author of nine best-selling texts in athletic training, sports medicine, and health-related fitness.
